Branding & Graphic Design

Brand strategy, logo design and graphic design that say who you are and hold up everywhere your brand appears.

Your brand is the impression people carry away after every interaction with your organization. Helm Digital is a branding agency in Portland, Maine that helps businesses and nonprofits define who they are, then express it consistently through logo design, visual identity and messaging.

We start with strategy, not sketches. Once we understand your audience, your competitors and what makes you different, design decisions get easier and the brand holds up wherever it appears, from your website to your signage.

Brand strategy before brand design

A strong brand answers a few questions clearly: who you serve, what you stand for, and why someone should choose you. We work through those questions with your team, then turn the answers into positioning, messaging and a visual identity that fit together.

Our branding process

  1. Discover. We interview your team, review your materials and study your market.
  2. Define. We agree on positioning, personality and the messages that matter most.
  3. Design. We develop identity concepts and refine the strongest direction with you.
  4. Document. We build guidelines and templates so your team can use the brand with confidence.
  5. Roll out. We help apply the new brand everywhere it needs to appear.

Graphic design that stays on brand

A brand only works if it's used consistently. Beyond identity work, our designers create the materials organizations use every day, including brochures, signage, presentations, annual reports and social templates. Our work for Housing Partnership Equity Trust turned a dry annual report into a story investors and partners wanted to read.

Launching or rebranding?

A new brand is the right moment to rethink your website too. See our rebrand and launch approach and our web design work. E-commerce brands work with our specialty team at First Pier, and architects, builders and designers work with Vernacular.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you refresh our brand without starting over?

Yes. Not every brand needs a full overhaul. We start by learning what already works and what's holding you back, then recommend anything from a light refresh of your logo, colors and type to a complete repositioning.

What's included in brand guidelines?

Brand guidelines document how your brand looks and sounds: logo usage, color palette, typography, imagery, voice and tone, and examples in use. They keep your team, printers and partners consistent everywhere your brand appears.

Do you only design logos?

No. A logo is one piece of a brand. We also handle brand strategy and positioning, messaging, visual systems, print collateral, signage, presentations and the templates your team uses day to day.

How long does a branding project take?

It depends on the scope, from a focused logo refresh to a full rebrand with strategy, messaging, a new visual identity and rollout. We share a timeline with milestones in your proposal so you know when to expect each round of work.
