Overview
The client

The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) is a non-profit stewardship organization based in Pennsylvania that facilitates and manages the safe collection and proper disposal of mercury-containing thermostats. Originally founded in 1998 by Honeywell, White-Rodgers, and General Electric, the program is currently supported by 30 manufacturers with the collective goal of keeping mercury out of the waste stream to protect the environment.

The challenge

TRC's internal database for tracking recycled thermostats was outdated and no longer met its needs, and staff spent hundreds of hours each year manually building compliance reports for every state TRC reports to.

Our approach

Our work with TRC began with a website rebuild and email marketing and grew into a long partnership. We later rebuilt the site again with a public portal for collection data, ran campaigns to recruit new collection points, and created printable materials that taught people how to recycle thermostats.

A database built for the mission

When TRC's internal database fell behind, we evaluated the options and chose a platform that could handle both its existing needs and where TRC wanted to go. We built a custom recycling database on Salesforce, connected it to the website through APIs so collection data was searchable in public, and moved nearly 20 years of history into it. It became TRC's CRM, reporting tool and business intelligence system in one.

Reporting that runs itself

We added GIS tools that mapped collection density across the country and a Tableau reporting suite for deeper analysis and at-a-glance dashboards. Then we automated the annual compliance reports TRC owed every state it worked in, so a job that once took hundreds of hours started with a single click.

The results
  • A custom Salesforce-based recycling database loaded with nearly 20 years of historical data and searchable from the website.
  • GIS mapping and Tableau dashboards showing collections by collection point, town, county, state or radius over any time period.
  • Annual state compliance reports generated with one click, saving thousands of dollars a year.
  • Rebuilt websites, a public reporting portal and campaigns to recruit new collection points.

The takeaway

Across a long partnership, we delivered marketing, digital, CRM and operational strategy for this environmentally focused nonprofit, always looking for ways to reduce cost and improve visibility of data, ultimately resulting in less mercury in the waste stream.
