Leeway Foundation

A rebuilt website for Philadelphia's Leeway Foundation that tells its story through grantee profiles, grant programs and filterable archives.

Overview
The client

Based in Philadelphia, the Leeway Foundation supports women and trans artists and cultural producers working in communities at the intersection of art, culture, and social change. Through grantmaking and other programs, Leeway promotes artistic expression that amplifies the voices of those on the margins, promotes sustainable and healthy communities, and works in the service of movements for economic and social justice.

The challenge

Leeway wanted its website to tell the organization's story through its grantees and grant programs. That meant organizing a complex, relational set of grantee profiles, grants and projects into something visitors could browse and filter.

Our approach

Leeway's story is best told by the artists it funds, so we rebuilt and repositioned the website around them.

Information architecture first

Every grantee has a profile with a headshot, biography, awarded grants, website and related work, and every grant program connects back to the people it supported. Making that relational structure easy to browse took careful information architecture, so visitors can filter by grantee or by project and follow the connections between them.

A site that does the daily work

Beyond storytelling, the site had to run Leeway's programs. We designed it to be fully responsive and to handle applications, submissions and events, with support for video, podcasts and photo galleries that let grantees' work speak for itself.

The results
  • A rebuilt, responsive website centered on grantee profiles with headshots, biographies, awarded grants, websites and related content.
  • Filterable grantee and project archives built on new information architecture.
  • Support for applications, submissions, events, video, podcasts and photo galleries.
In their words

The takeaway

We were honored to help an organization better tell its story through inspiring artists and support two causes that are important to us: social change and the arts.
